Our homeland, Hinterzarten, was founded in 1148 and is today considered a health resort with a healthy climate. Hinterzarten is located in the southern Black Forest about 25 kilometres east of Freiburg im Breisgau and can be reached by car via the B31 or by train with the so-called Höllentalbahn.
But it was not until the beginning of the 18th century that the name Hinterzarten was created. This name was probably created by the contraction of the former bailiff's name Hinter der Straß in der Zarten.
The fact that Hinterzarten is such a well-known and popular spa and holiday resort today is mainly due to the construction of the Höllentalbahn. The Höllentalbahn was built in 1887 especially as a local railway for tourist traffic. At that time it brought Hinterzarten a doubling of the number of guests and overnight stays.
During the construction period of the Höllentalbahn from 1884 on, the inn Zum Bahnhof in Hinterzarten (today Hotel Schwarzwaldhof) was also built. During the time of the 100th anniversary of Hinterzarten in 1987, there was a political struggle to preserve the Höllentalbahn. This gave the Höllentalbahn a new heyday. Modern and comfortable double-decker coaches run on this highest railway line of the Bahn AG.
In 1923 the Hinterzarten Ski Club was founded and the first ski jump was built. However, the Kirchwaldschanze soon turned out to be too small. It was used as a training hill for a long time before it was abandoned in 1974. One year later, however, the Adlerschanze was built. On 24 February 1925 the first competition took place in Hinterzarten. According to the chronicle of the ski club, distances of up to 60 metres were reached.
